Sunday Sketching

Fourth Sunday of every month, no matter the weather, we go sketching somewhere in Montreal. If weather is looking unreliable we’ll choose an indoor location. Check this space for updates.

There’s no official need to RSVP. Just show up with some drawing stuff if you’d like to join in.  We are usually easy to find – just look for the ones with the sketchbooks drawing on the street.

You don’t have to post your drawings afterwards, but we do have a Facebook we encourage you to join. Sometimes someone will be taking pictures while we draw, so your work might turn up on the blog that way.

Our usual format is to meet at 10 am, scout the area a bit and be sketching by 10. We tend to do one session in the morning, break for lunch, and do another in the afternoon, usually wrapping up by 4pm.  There are no drawing assignments or instruction, whatever you want to draw is cool. Whatever art materials you like is fine too. Most of us use sketchbooks or watercolors and folding easels so we can pack light and move if we want. We’ll often spread out and wander around the area, then meet up to show ‘n tell at the breaks.

Upcoming Sketching:

Sunday May 26: NEW LOCATION Musée des Beaux Arts: 10 AM

images

Considering recent rainy days – we’re calling a new meeting spot – our stand by indoor spot the Musée des Beaux Arts. Alwasys plenty to draw there, and if we have moments of calm between the rains, there are some good streets near by. I was down in the district the other day and saw a pretty awesome fire-damaged mansion – I hope they haven’t started repairs yet – it was quite goth-y. But anyway – that’s the new spot – Museum of Fine Arts – see you Sunday!

May 26: Tam Tam drummers on Parc:

Let’s meet at 10 am at the George-Étienne Cartier Monument (the Angel statue) in the park on Ave du Parc, where Rue Rachel would intersect, if it went that far.  We can sketch in the area (plenty of interesting stuff nearby), and later in the day there should be drumming and the various Parc activities – (I’ve see the sword-fighting-players already this year, there are usually slack ropers around, etc). There are numerous lunch alternatives in the area within a short walk – I’d suggest La Chilenita at 64 Rue Marie-Anne Ouest (Marie-anne and Clark) for excellent tacos and empanadas – but there’s plenty more choices on St. Laurent only  a few more blocks east.

Past Outings:

April 28th: Atwater Market and the Lachine canal:

I’m new to this area of town – but I’ve heard good reviews – so lets meet at the Atwater Market and sketch views on the Canal. I’m going to suggest meeting at 10 am in the ‘back’ of the market – south end – there is a pedestrian bridge across the canal. (See photo) . That’s a good meeting point to start from. From here we can head across, up or down, or if you’re of a mind to go back into the market. Afternoon show-and-tell meetup will be 3:30 at the Premier Moisson in the Market.

March 24th: Dim Sum Brunch

Lets meet at 10am at Restaurant Kam Fung, It’s on the second floor at 1111, Rue Saint-Urbain – the big building on the corner of St. Urbain and René Lévesque. We can have a relaxed dim sum breakfast and sketch the delicacies as we eat – or if you want to sketch on the street, head down to the nearby the shops in Chinatown. We can meet up at 3pm on the street level at the intersection of St-Urbain and De la Gauchetière to find somewhere nearby for coffee or a bubble tea – and the ritual of showing off sketchbooks.

Feb 24:  New location! Metro sketchcrawl (green line) – Meet at 10 am at Place des Arts station, ticket booth level, near the passage way to Place des Arts. Sketch along the metro line or, if weather is nice, outside at the entrances. We will break at 12pm for lunch and pick up again for an afternoon session. At 2pm, meet back up at Place des Arts Station where there will be a free dance lesson, part of the STM’s Metro Arts series. Come joins us for a final hour of dancing, sketching and checking out everyone’s drawings!

Sept 23: New Location! Jean Talon Market – we are shifting spots, since the forecast says rain.  9:30

Oct 28:  New Location!  – Weather again. Meeting is now at the Mont-Royal Metro (orange line) in the square on street level, 10AM. If it’s rainy or too chilly there are plenty of cafes and restaurants in the immediate area, or we  can explore some of the interesting shops. We’ll pick a couple lunch and ‘tea-time’ meeting places to stay warm, and see everyone’s drawings.

Nov 25:  McGill Campus and the Redpath Museum. Join us outside at 10am if you are willing to brave the cold. Meet at 12pm at the Second Cup on Ave McGill College and President Kennedy for a quick warmup, and we’ll sketch indoors at the Redpath at 1pm when it opens. The Redpath is free, but will accept a small donation.

Dec 23:  Probably this is blacked out for holidays? Unless I hear from some very dedicated sketchers!

Jan 27:  Musee des beaux-arts – opens at 10 am – meet in the lobby
