Exploring Peru

January 31, 2013

This evening I was back at the Museum of Fine Arts to preview the new exhibit, Peru: Kingdoms of the Sun and the Moon. Produced by the MMFA, the exhibits looks at the history of Peru covering 3000 years.

One of the themes was the Andean relationship with death. It was considered that death was not the end and so funeral preparations were very important. The sketch above is from this section

What struck me most from the exhibit was just how radically Spain’s conquest of Peru in the 16th century changed the art of the time. It was equally interesting to see how, once Peru gained its independence in 1821, the shift in their art back to their roots, but still with a Spanish influence.

Peru: Kingdoms of the Sun and the Moon opens to the public February 2nd and runs until June 16th.

You went already! That’s a great idea – using the members preview to get some sketches.

Thanks for sharing Jen. Great idea. Love how you treated the glass.
